Kingfishers Class - Year 3 & 4

Kingfishers marks the transition from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 and prepares the children for the next exciting steps in their education. It is a mixed Year 3/4 class where the children are taught either as whole class or in groups within some areas of the curriculum so that every child can be supported appropriately, according to their specific needs. Additional adult support is used to help children with special educational needs, including those who are more able.

Although some subjects are taught independently, a creative approach to learning is continued and many aspects of the curriculum are covered within the whole school topics. A variety of school trips are enjoyed by the children to supplement their learning. There is also an emphasis on the children gradually becoming more independent learners so that they are ready for the further challenges of upper Key Stage 2.

DT Day - Electronic Poster

Our brief was to create an electronic poster to be displayed in a museum. We based ours on our current topic, Ancient Egypt. The children managed to:

-Research and choose a specific Ancient Egypt topic on which to base their initial poster ideas.

-Complete design criteria based on a client’s request.

-Roughly sketch four initial poster ideas, indicating where a bulb will be located for each.

-Review their initial ideas against the design criteria and peer feedback, developing a final design.

-Assemble an electric poster, including a functional simple circuit with a bulb, following a demonstration.

-Test that the simple circuit works by adding a battery.

-Evaluate their electric posters in a letter to a client.

Colchester Castle trip!

Badgers Class went to Colchester Castle as part of their new topic, The Romans! The children took on the role of archaeologists and learned about the events that led to up to Boudica’s revolt. They discovered the impact this had on people’s lives as Colchester changed from an Iron Age settlement to a prosperous Roman town.

The day included a journey back 2000 years as they descended into the Roman vaults under the Castle. The children worked as part of a team to reconstruct a large model Roman villa and Iron Age roundhouse. They handled real Roman pottery and investigated its uses. The children also got to try on different costumes and rode a chariot!

Zones of regulation

We have been exploring zones of regulation in Badgers classroom. Zones of regulation is an approach to develop self-regulation in children. In Badgers, we understand the importance of mental health and that children feel a variety of emotions and these are categorized into four coloured zones.

By implementing the Zones of Regulation curriculum we aim to teach our pupils to identify emotions in themselves and others and provide them with a bank of strategies to help regulate their emotions and improve their wellbeing

Times Table Rock Stars

Each week we compete on TTRS. The more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to carry out harder calculations. Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) is a fun and challenging programme designed to help students master their times tables!

Homework

In Badgers class, our regular weekly homework activities are reading, spellings and times tables. In addition, the children will be given maths and English homework on alternate weeks.

Reading should be a daily activity. If possible, please hear your child read each day and put a comment in their reading log. Children will complete book quizzes and be guided to choose appropriate material to support their reading development.

Spellings will be given each week via Spelling Shed and tested on a Friday.

The objective of our geography lesson was to explore how structures are built and investigate what methods of building can make the tallest and strongest structure.
